Know the Numbers that Can Benefit Your Practice

“Measurement is the first step that leads to control and eventually to improvement. If you can’t measure something, you can’t understand it. If you can’t understand it, you can’t control it. If you can’t control it, you can’t improve it,” said H. James Harrington. In your dental practice, patients receive perio exams to help assess their oral health. If a number is too high, the patient is facing more health risks. When you take your car in for a tune-up, the mechanics measure specific things, such as the tread wear of your tires. Your practice is not any different. Are you measuring the most important numbers on a monthly basis?

Do you know what your true active patient base is? Do you know what percentage of your total practice production is coming from your hygiene department? How about the percentage of treatment presented to your patients that is actually accepted? Or what percentage of patients who came in for a hygiene appointment made their next appointment? Do you know your average production per hour, or how many new patients you had for the month and where they came from?

Why are these numbers so important? Because each number connects to other parts of your business. For example, 75% to 85% of a doctor’s production comes from patients flowing through their hygiene department. While the patient is in the hygiene chair, they receive X-rays and exams that are used to diagnose necessary treatment. Or why is it best practices to try to reappoint the patient’s next hygiene appointment? Because experience tells us that over 80% of patients who reappoint their next hygiene appointment keep that appointment. So this helps us forecast how we are performing in the future based on how we are performing today.
