Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Dentrix G5?
A: Dentrix G5 is the latest version of the Dentrix practice management software.
It includes several new software features and enhancements, including the following:
- A true client-server database architecture: This architecture adds
additional stability and efficiency to the software because the server rather than
the workstations now performs the work of retrieving and writing data to and from
the database.
- Electronic EOBs: You can now receive and post electronic insurance
payment information to the Dentrix database using an electronic Explanation of Benefits
(eEOB) or Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA). The Batch Insurance Payment Entry
dialog box has been modified so you can easily enter check insurance payments
and review, edit, and post electronic insurance payments from the same location.
- Claim attachment requirement notifications: Those who use eClaims
will be notified when they submit a claim if the payor requires a claim attachment
for specific procedures if the attachment is missing.
- A new Screen Capture feature: This new feature allows you to select
an area of the screen, capture it, and automatically attach the image to an insurance
claim, then save the image in the Document Center.
- Report monitoring for improved security: Monitoring when someone
previews or prints Day Sheet and Audit Trail reports is easier now. Each type of
report has its own record in the Dentrix database and its own series of sequential
audit numbers so that you can track each report type individually.
- Easier access to the Tutor database: A new option was added to
make switching in and out of the Tutor database much easier. After you switch out
of the Tutor database, Dentrix automatically reconnects to your practice’s live
database.

G5, read the Dentrix G5 Release Guide, available in the Dentrix Resource
Center at www.dentrix.com/resource-center
Q: What are the system requirements for installing and using Dentrix G5?
A: System Requirements are subject to change as Dentrix is tested with new hardware
and software. Click here to obtain the most current version of the Dentrix G5 System Requirements.
Q: What else should I know before installing this software upgrade?
A: With the release of Dentrix G5, the Dentrix database location has been moved
to
<Drive Letter>:\DENTRIX\Common. If you are upgrading from a previous version,
your current backup configuration will no longer be valid and you will need to re-configure
your backup software to back up the new location of the Dentrix database files.
If you are using eBackUp, please contact eServices Customer Support at 1-800-734-5561
for assistance. If you use a third-party backup product, please contact Henry Schein
TechCentral (800-288-7691) or a qualified integration specialist.
Also, beginning with Dentrix G4, Henry Schein Practice Solutions no longer develops
solutions for or tests compatibility with Windows 2000. Dentrix G5 will not install
on Windows 2000 or prior Windows operating systems.
Q: If I’m currently using an older version of Dentrix (version 11, G2, or G3),
do I need to upgrade to G4 before I can install G5?
A: Yes. Dentrix G4 or higher must be installed before you can upgrade the program
to Dentrix G5. To determine which version of Dentrix is installed, in the Office
Manager, from the Help menu, click About Office Manager.
If the version is older than Dentrix G4, all product upgrades must be installed
to bring the version to Dentrix G4. For example, if Dentrix 11.0 is currently installed,
you must upgrade to version G4 before installing Dentrix G5. You can upgrade from
Dentrix 11 (or G2/G3) directly to Dentrix G4.
The Dentrix G4 software is also included on the Dentrix G5 installation DVD for
those who need to upgrade to Dentrix G4 first.
Q: How do I get the release?
A: Dentrix G5 is available on DVD only; existing customers will not be able to upgrade
to G5 using the Check for Updates feature.
Dentrix G5 DVDs will be available to new Dentrix customers in February 2012. Dentrix
G5 DVDs will begin shipping to existing customers in March 2012. It may take several
weeks before all existing Dentrix customers receive their upgrade DVDs. Customers
who need to request a Dentrix G5 DVD sooner may contact Dentrix Customer Support
at 1-800-336-8749.
Q: How long will it take to install Dentrix G5?
A: The installation time will vary depending on the number of computers that need
to be upgraded and the speed of your computers. You should set aside plenty of time
for the software upgrade after regular business hours. For more information about
installing Dentrix G5, read the Dentrix G5 Installation Guide, available
in the Dentrix Resource Center at www.dentrix.com/resource-center.
Q: Do I need to close my software programs before running the installation?
A: Yes, you should close all Dentrix modules at the workstation where you are installing
Dentrix. (If certain Dentrix modules that need to be updated are left open, the
installation program will prompt you to close them before it can proceed.) Once
computers have completed the Dentrix upgrade, they may run Dentrix immediately,
even if other computers on the same network have not yet finished the installation.
Q: What if I have other questions about this upgrade?
A: For other questions regarding this software, contact Dentrix Customer Support
at 1-800-336-8749.
